15 Rescued as Two-Storey Building Collapses in Lagos - The Alternative News

At least 15 persons have been rescued after a two-storey building collapsed in the Oyingbo area of Lagos State in the early hours of Monday.

The incident occurred at 54 Cole Street, near Cemetery Bus Stop, around 12:20 a.m., according to a statement by the Director of the Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service, Margaret Adeseye.

Adeseye said the Sari-Iganmu Fire Station team was immediately deployed to the scene following a distress call. She confirmed that the building, which had earlier shown signs of structural weakness, gave way while residents were still inside.

“It is an ongoing rescue involving an existing two-storey building which had reportedly been marked in distress before collapsing on the occupants,” the statement read.

So far, 15 people, comprising seven men, four women, and four children, have been rescued with varying degrees of injuries and taken to the Federal Medical Centre, Ebute-Metta, and the General Hospital, Odan, on Lagos Island.

Rescue operations were still ongoing as of press time, with emergency agencies working to determine whether more victims remain trapped under the rubble.

Building collapses have become a recurring tragedy in Lagos, often blamed on poor regulation enforcement, substandard materials, and inadequate inspections.

In November 2021, a high-rise building in Ikoyi collapsed during construction, killing at least 42 people, while another collapse in Yaba in September 2025 claimed several lives.
