The Dangote Refinery is set for a major expansion that will increase its capacity from 650,000 barrels per day (bpd) to 1.4 million bpd, according to the President of the Dangote Group, Alhaji Aliko Dangote.
Speaking at a press briefing in Lagos on Sunday, Dangote, flanked by his longtime associate and the Chairman of First Bank, Mr. Femi Otedola, said the project would make the facility the largest refinery in the world.
“We are expanding the Dangote Petroleum Refinery from 650,000 barrels per day to 1.4 million barrels per day. Upon completion, this will make it the largest refinery in the world, surpassing the Jamnagar Refinery in India,” Dangote announced.
The construction, he said, will commence without delay and is expected to be completed within three years. About 65,000 workers will be engaged during the project, with 85 per cent of them being Nigerians.
Dangote also revealed plans to double the refinery’s power generation from 500 megawatts (MW) to 1,000 MW, and to upgrade its fuel output to Euro 6 standard, up from the current Euro 5 specification.
He further disclosed that the Dangote Refinery would be listed on the Nigerian Stock Exchange in 2026, allowing Nigerians to become shareholders in the multibillion-dollar enterprise.
Expressing gratitude to President Bola Tinubu for his continued support, Dangote reaffirmed the group’s commitment to advancing Nigeria’s industrial growth and energy independence.
