Ahead of the second leg of the 2026 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) qualifier against the Amazons of Benin Republic, Ogun State Governor, Prince Dapo Abiodun, has boosted the morale of the Super Falcons with a cash reward of ₦50 million.
Governor Abiodun announced the gesture on Monday at his office in Oke-Mosan, Abeokuta, when he received the Super Falcons, who are billed to play the return leg of their final WAFCON qualifier at the MKO Abiola International Stadium on Tuesday.
The Super Falcons had earlier defeated the Amazons of Benin Republic 2–0 on Friday, October 24, with goals from Chinwendu Ihezuo and Esther Okoronkwo in Cotonou.
Speaking during the reception, Governor Abiodun described the Falcons’ return to the MKO Abiola Sports Arena as “a validation that Ogun State is doing something right,” adding that his administration remains committed to developing the stadium’s environment with new facilities, including a four- or five-star hotel, cinema, and shopping centre.
While congratulating the team on their historic 10th WAFCON title won in Morocco, the governor noted that their victory brought immense pride and excitement to the entire nation.
Abiodun said the Super Falcons represent more than just football, describing them as embodiments of leadership, teamwork, and discipline.
“As you prepare for the match, we will be supporting you, and I have no doubt that you’re going to qualify,” he said.
“My support today is to appreciate you for your last victory and to motivate you for your next tournament. On behalf of myself, my team, and the good people of Ogun State, we are giving you a token of ₦50 million as motivation.
“You can always count on Ogun State’s support because we believe that through you, other young women will be inspired, to be disciplined, to believe that what a man can do, a woman can do even better. They will also be inspired to aspire to leadership positions. For that reason and more, we will continue to support you,” the Governor added.
In his remarks, the team’s head coach, Justin Madugu, expressed gratitude for the hospitality and world-class facilities made available in Ogun State, which he said have consistently made the team’s work easier.
“This evening at the stadium, we were asked about the facilities Your Excellency has put up for our dear country and Ogun State in particular. We are very happy. Each time we know we are coming to play here, we have no worries about facilities or reception. We are always well received, and we are very grateful, sir," he said.
Also speaking, the Super Falcons captain, Rasheedat Ajibade, thanked Governor Abiodun for his unwavering support and commitment to the development of sports in Ogun State.
She assured that the team would continue to make Nigerians proud saying, “We appreciate Your Excellency for the world-class playing turf and facilities you’ve provided. We promise to keep putting smiles on the faces of Nigerians by securing victories whenever we wear the green and white of our nation.”
