Plateau Govt Slams Military Inaction After Deadly Attack Near Checkpoints Claims 27 Lives - The Alternative News

The Plateau State Government has expressed strong disapproval of the Nigerian Army’s failure to apprehend or neutralize the perpetrators of Monday’s massacre in Tahoss community, Riyom Local Government Area, where 27 farmers were brutally killed.

Speaking on Channels Television’s The Morning Brief on Friday, State Commissioner for Information, Hon. Joyce Ramnap, revealed that the attackers operated in close proximity to a military checkpoint, just 200 meters away, yet no arrests were made.

“The response we got was that none were arrested and none were captured, The military even acknowledged making contact with the attackers," Ramnap stated.

She questioned how such an atrocity could be carried out near security outposts without any meaningful intervention. According to her, the massacre occurred near an access road protected by military personnel, raising serious concerns about the security infrastructure in the region.

“We do not want to stereotype and say the entire army compromised,”  however, there is room to do more investigation, and the governor specifically requested that there should have been at least some arrests," Ramnap said.

She emphasized that attackers approached the community from three different directions. While one flank was reportedly contained, the side closest to where villagers were sheltering in a church saw the heaviest casualties.

The pastor, she added, fled his home during the attack, only for six people to be killed inside it shortly afterward.

“These killings are unprovoked and despicable. Beyond the loss of life, the attackers are also destroying farms and livelihoods,” Ramnap said.

Governor Caleb Mutfwang, who visited the scene on Wednesday, described the killings as genocidal and renewed calls for accountability and justice.

Plateau State has been rocked by a series of increasingly deadly attacks in recent months. In April 2025, more than 100 people were killed in Bokkos and Bassa LGAs, following a similar pattern of coordinated violence. The state’s worst incident in recent memory occurred on Christmas Eve 2023, when 150 people were massacred in Bokkos.

Despite repeated assurances from security agencies, the government and residents continue to demand concrete action to halt what many now see as a sustained campaign of terror in the region.
