2027: Peter Obi Vows to Serve Only One Term If Elected President - The Alternative News

Former Anambra State Governor and 2023 Labour Party presidential candidate, Mr. Peter Obi, has pledged to serve only one term of four years if elected president in the 2027 general elections.

In a statement released on his official X (formerly Twitter) handle on Sunday, Obi said the vow is a reflection of his commitment to purposeful and accountable leadership, drawing inspiration from global icons like Abraham Lincoln, John F. Kennedy, and Nelson Mandela.

“I will serve only one term of four years if elected President. And that vow is sacrosanct,” Obi declared.

The former governor stressed that extended time in office does not necessarily translate to effective leadership. According to him, many African leaders become more susceptible to corruption the longer they remain in power.

He referenced the legacies of Lincoln and Kennedy, who, despite their short time in office, made enduring impacts. He also praised Mandela’s decision to step down after one term as South Africa’s president, despite public pressure to continue.

“Longevity in office is not a mark of success; rather, it is purposeful, accountable service, however brief,  that defines true statesmanship,” Obi said.

Addressing widespread public distrust in politicians, Obi acknowledged the cynicism among Nigerians but insisted that his personal and political record proves he is a man of integrity.

“When I entered politics in Anambra State, I made clear and measurable promises... I fulfilled each of those promises without deviation,” he said.
“My vow to serve only one term is a solemn commitment... If elected, I will not spend a day longer than four years in office.”

Obi also criticized the notion that such a commitment is unrealistic, stating that Nigeria’s constitution already outlines a four-year renewable term and that effective leadership does not require an extended stay in power.

The declaration comes as political activity gradually builds ahead of the 2027 elections, with many Nigerians closely watching opposition figures and their plans for governance reform.
