Alaafin to Install Seyi Tinubu as Okanlomo of Yorubaland - The Alternative News

The Alaafin of Oyo, Oba Abimbola Owoade, will on Saturday install Seyi Tinubu, son of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, as the Okanlomo of Yorubaland.

On the same day, Senator Abdul’Aziz Yari, who represents Zamfara West Senatorial District, will be installed as the Obaloyin of Yorubaland.

Details of the chieftaincy installations were contained in a flier circulating on social media on Wednesday, inviting the general public to the event scheduled for Saturday, December 21, 2025. The invitation was jointly issued by the monarch and his wife, Ayaba Abiwumi Owoade.

The title Okanlomo of Yorubaland is a revered Yoruba honorific, often interpreted as “the beloved child of the Yoruba people,” symbolising affection, acceptance, and prominence within the race.

Confirming the development, the Alaafin’s media aide, Bode Durojaiye, told our correspondent via telephone that the installations would proceed as planned.

“Yes, it is true. The Alaafin of Oyo will install Seyi Tinubu as Okanlomo of Yorubaland and Senator Abdul’Aziz Yari as Obaloyin of Yorubaland. An official press statement will be released shortly,” Durojaiye said.

The development comes months after the Ooni of Ife, Oba Adeyeye Enitan Ogunwusi, conferred the title Okanlomo of Oodua on Ibadan-born philanthropist and Bada Olubadan-designate, Dotun Sanusi, a move that briefly sparked a supremacy debate among Yoruba traditional institutions before being resolved by stakeholders.

Recently, the Ooni also honoured First Lady, Senator Oluremi Tinubu, with the title Yeye Asiwaju Gbogbo Ile Oodua during activities marking his 10th coronation anniversary.

The title, previously held by the late Chief (Mrs) Hannah Idowu Dideolu Awolowo, wife of Chief Obafemi Awolowo, is regarded as a symbol of leadership, influence, and service to the Yoruba people.

The ceremony attracted traditional rulers and dignitaries from across the country, including the Sultan of Sokoto, the Olu of Warri, Ogiame Atuwatse III, and the Soun of Ogbomoso.
