Iran has once again announced the closure of the Strait of Hormuz, citing the continued presence of United States forces in the region and Israel’s refusal to withdraw from southern Lebanon.
According to a report by the New York Post, the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) made the announcement in a statement broadcast over maritime radio channels on Friday.
The IRGC accused the United States of violating the memorandum of understanding signed earlier this week between Washington and Tehran by President Donald Trump and Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian.
The statement noted that key conditions of the agreement included Israel’s withdrawal from Lebanon, the complete lifting of the naval blockade and the withdrawal of American forces from the Persian Gulf and surrounding areas.
“Since Israel’s withdrawal from Lebanon, the complete lifting of the naval blockade, and the withdrawal of American forces from the region are among the main conditions of the agreement between Iran and the United States, the Strait of Hormuz will remain closed until these conditions are met,” the IRGC stated.
The group also issued a warning to maritime operators, urging all vessels to avoid approaching the strait for their safety. It added that any ship that disregards the directive could be targeted.
In a separate statement, the IRGC-affiliated Tasnim news agency emphasized that the closure would remain in effect until Israel halts its operations and fully withdraws from Lebanese territory. It further warned that ongoing Israeli actions undermine the agreement and could lead to the suspension of future negotiations.
“The continuation of Israeli actions and the occupation of Lebanese land signify the collapse of the agreement, and this must not be tolerated,” the statement read.
