A son of the late Boko Haram leader, Abubakar Shekau, has reportedly surfaced within the ranks of the insurgent group, sparking fresh concerns over the possible continuation of his father’s militant network and ideology.

Security analyst Zagazola Makama identified the individual as Ibn Mohammed bin Shekau, noting that he has begun to take steps within the organisation.

The reported development has drawn significant attention due to Shekau’s notorious role in the Boko Haram insurgency, which devastated communities across Nigeria’s North-East and beyond for several years.

Abubakar Shekau assumed leadership of the group following the death of its founder, Mohammed Yusuf. Under his command, Boko Haram carried out numerous attacks targeting communities, security personnel, government institutions and civilians across Nigeria and neighbouring countries.

Shekau also gained global notoriety through propaganda videos in which he issued threats, claimed responsibility for attacks, and promoted extremist ideology.

He died in 2021 after a confrontation with fighters from the Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP), a development that significantly altered the balance of power among insurgent factions operating in the Lake Chad region and Sambisa Forest.

Following his death, ISWAP absorbed some Boko Haram fighters, while others loyal to the Jama’atu Ahlis Sunna Lidda’awati wal-Jihad (JAS) faction continued their operations independently.

The reported emergence of Ibn Mohammed is now being closely monitored for indications of whether he may attempt to assume a more prominent role within the surviving faction.
