Nigerian Arrested in Ghana Over Alleged Bank Robbery Plot - The Alternative News

A Nigerian national, identified as Augustine Okechuku Maazi, has been arrested by the Ghana Police Service in connection with an alleged foiled robbery attempt targeting three banks in the Labone area of Accra.

According to the Ghana Police, officers received intelligence at about 10:45 a.m. on Thursday, August 13, that a gang was planning to attack GCB Bank, Ecobank and Zenith Bank branches in Labone.

The police immediately deployed officers to the area, where suspected gang members were reportedly spotted in two vehicles parked close to the banks.

The police said one of the vehicles sped off upon sighting the officers. After a chase, Maazi was arrested, while another occupant of the vehicle escaped.

The occupants of the second vehicle also attempted to flee while allegedly firing at the police. The officers returned fire, resulting in the deaths of two suspects.

The police said they recovered a Toyota Highlander with registration number GS-1434-18, a Hyundai Tucson with registration number GS-7915-17 and a pistol.

Maazi remains in police custody and is assisting with the investigation, while the bodies of the two deceased suspects have been deposited at a morgue for preservation, identification and autopsy.
