FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
The Sports Writers Association of Nigeria (SWAN), Ogun State Chapter, has announced the postponement of its annual SWAN/Security Cup football competition to March 2027.
The decision affects all participating security agencies and their personnel who take part in the annual competition.
The SWAN/Security Cup is an annual football competition involving security agencies across Ogun State. The initiative was established to foster synergy, camaraderie and stronger working relationships among security operatives, while promoting physical fitness, mental alertness and overall well-being.
According to a release signed by the Secretary of Ogun SWAN, Olusegun Folarin, the competition has successfully recorded five editions since its inception in 2021, bringing together personnel from various security agencies across the state in the spirit of sportsmanship, friendship and inter-agency cooperation.
However, after careful consideration of the security demands associated with the forthcoming 2027 general elections, SWAN has decided to postpone the competition.
With political campaigns expected to commence in September 2026 and intensify through January 2027, participating security agencies and their personnel are expected to be heavily engaged in providing adequate security, maintaining law and order, protecting lives and property, and ensuring a peaceful electoral process across Ogun State.
SWAN believes the postponement is necessary to enable the security agencies to concentrate fully on their constitutional and statutory responsibilities during this crucial period, without additional commitments that could affect their operational readiness.
Accordingly, the 6th edition of the SWAN/Security Cup will hold in March 2027, following the swearing-in of the next administration, when the association anticipates a more conducive security environment for the successful hosting of the competition.
Ogun SWAN sincerely regrets any inconvenience the postponement may cause participating security agencies, their personnel, organisers, partners and other stakeholders.
The association also appreciates the tremendous support, cooperation and interest the competition has enjoyed since its inception, particularly from its headline sponsor, VALUEJET AIRLINE.
SWAN, Ogun State Chapter, remains committed to using sports as a platform to strengthen inter-agency cooperation, promote healthy living and deepen the bond between the media and the security community.
The association looks forward to welcoming all participating security agencies and their personnel to an exciting 6th edition of the SWAN/Security Cup in March 2027.
