More than 200 professors and other academic staff have reportedly left Kaduna State University (KASU) over poor conditions of service and the non-implementation of the 2025 Federal Government–Academic Staff Union of Universities (FGN-ASUU) Agreement.
The ASUU-KASU chapter disclosed this on Monday, issuing a two-week ultimatum to the university authorities and other relevant stakeholders to commence the full implementation and domestication of the agreement.
The ASUU-KASU Chairman, Abubakar Abdullahi, made the disclosure at a press conference held at the union’s secretariat at KASU, Kaduna.
According to Abdullahi, the agreement, which provides for improved conditions of service for academic staff in Nigerian universities, took effect in January 2026 but has yet to be implemented at KASU.
He said the union had written several letters to the university management, Governing Council, Visitor to the university and the Kaduna State Government, urging them to implement the agreement in line with the law establishing the institution.
The union said the prolonged delay had made KASU academic staff among the least-paid university workers in the country and contributed to the departure of experienced lecturers, including professors.
ASUU warned that failure to address the situation within two weeks could result in a total, comprehensive and indefinite strike.
The union also cited other unresolved issues, including university autonomy, excessive workload, promotion arrears, death benefits, group life insurance, 25 and 35 per cent wage awards and pension remittances.
ASUU-KASU urged the university authorities and other stakeholders to urgently address the issues to prevent industrial action and preserve peace and stability at the institution.
