The Osun State Police Command has recovered another corpse from the Mayfair Motor Park in Ile-Ife, bringing the number of people confirmed dead in connection with Sunday’s shooting to two.

The development came as the remains of Olalekan Oyeyemi, a chieftain of the Accord Party popularly known as Emir Ajagungbade, were buried at his newly completed residence in the Agunbelewo area of Osogbo.

Oyeyemi was reportedly shot dead on Sunday during a clash involving him and a group led by another National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW) leader known as Sibi at the Mayfair Motor Park.

Confirming the recovery of the second corpse on Monday, the Osun Police spokesperson, Abiodun Ojelabi, said the body had been deposited at a morgue while the case had been transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department for further investigation.

He urged anyone mentioned in connection with the incident to report to the nearest police station, warning that all those found culpable would be arrested and prosecuted regardless of their status.

The shooting occurred amid reported tensions over the leadership of the NURTW in Osun, with Oyeyemi’s death linked to moves by some transport union members to install him as the next state chairman.

Meanwhile, Oyeyemi’s burial was conducted according to traditional rites and witnessed by close relatives and traditional priests. His associates, who accompanied his remains from the Osun State University Teaching Hospital, reportedly remained outside the premises during the interment.

Tension had earlier risen at the hospital when suspected associates of the deceased allegedly attacked two staff members after discovering that they were recording them on their phones. Police personnel later arrived at the hospital and restored calm.

Osun State Governor Ademola Adeleke had directed the Commissioner of Police, Ibrahim Zungura, to identify and arrest those responsible for the killing.

The state Commissioner for Transportation, Sesan Oyedele, also denied claims that he summoned NURTW leaders to his residence and secured government endorsement for Oyeyemi’s emergence as union chairman.

Oyedele said the NURTW leaders visited him on Sunday morning and informed him that they had agreed to support Oyeyemi’s candidacy. He said he promised to present their position to Governor Adeleke and other government officials.

According to the commissioner, he received news of Oyeyemi’s death about two hours after the delegation left his residence.

He appealed to residents to remain calm, assuring them that efforts were ongoing to resolve the crisis.
