The National Chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Nentawe Yilwatda, has claimed that the party’s internal polls indicate that President Bola Tinubu will win the 2027 presidential election.
Yilwatda made the claim during an appearance on Channels Television’s Sunday Politics, where he said the party had conducted surveys across states and obtained statistics showing Tinubu ahead of his potential challengers.
“We have done fact-finding; we are leading. We have done our polls. We have our own polls that give us the real statistics across the states,” he said.
Asked whether the polls indicated that Tinubu would win the election, Yilwatda responded, “Of course!”
The APC chairman said the ruling party was not intimidated by opposition parties, including the African Democratic Congress (ADC), which he associated with former Vice-President Atiku Abubakar, and the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), which he associated with Peter Obi.
He argued that the opposition parties’ inability to win elections ahead of 2027 gave the APC an advantage.
Yilwatda also compared Tinubu with Atiku, describing the incumbent president as “far better” than the former vice-president.
Defending the administration’s economic policies, he said its tax reforms had expanded the tax net and increased government revenue while providing benefits to the poorest Nigerians.
He also cited changes in the power sector, saying state governments had been empowered to generate, transmit and distribute electricity.
Yilwatda acknowledged the hardship associated with rising petrol prices but maintained that the situation was temporary.
“What we are passing through in Nigeria, for example, at this moment, is temporary. The increase in the cost of fuel is temporary. Nigerians believe in us,” he said.
On allegations that the APC protects its members from prosecution, Yilwatda said some party members were facing court proceedings and insisted that no one was shielded from the law.
He added that the party was reviewing its presidential campaign council list and would inaugurate it soon.
Yilwatda also said he had no objection to individuals or groups, including the Rainbow Coalition associated with FCT Minister Nyesom Wike, supporting Tinubu’s re-election bid.
He dismissed the “Tinubu Must Go” campaign as an opposition-driven effort, arguing that it did not reflect Nigerians’ views of the president.
