Why I Postponed Defection to APC - Gov Kefas Opens Up - The Alternative News

Taraba State Governor, Agbu Kefas, has placed his widely anticipated defection to the All Progressives Congress (APC) on hold.

The governor said he decided to suspend the planned move following the abduction of schoolgirls in Kebbi State, noting that it would be insensitive to proceed with any political celebration while the nation is grappling with yet another security tragedy.

Kefas explained that the situation calls for empathy, unity, and an unwavering focus on the safety of Nigerian children, not political fanfare. According to him, moments like this require leaders to rise above party lines and stand with families in distress.

He stressed that his administration has consistently prioritised security, education, and the protection of vulnerable groups, adding that it would be morally wrong to go ahead with any major political event until the kidnapped children receive urgent attention.

“In light of the deeply troubling incident of the kidnapping of innocent schoolgirls in Kebbi State, I have taken the solemn decision to postpone my scheduled declaration and movement to the All Progressives Congress,” he said.

“At a moment when our nation is once again confronted with the painful reality of insecurity, solidarity and compassion must rise above politics. The safety of our children is far more important than any political activity or ceremony,” he added.

The governor urged security agencies to intensify efforts to rescue the girls and called on Nigerians to remain prayerful, vigilant and united. He noted that a new date for his formal movement to the APC will be announced in due course.

Kefas had earlier scheduled his defection for Wednesday, following his announcement last week that he was leaving the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).
