Learners have been charged to imbibe the values of integrity, righteousness, accountability and sportsmanship, in order to become worthy and proud future leaders of the country.
Ogun State Commissioner for Education, Science and Technology, Prof. Abayomi Arigbabu, gave the charge in Abeokuta, during the National Quiz Competition on Legislature and Democracy, organised by the National Institute for Legislative and Democratic Studies (NILDS), Abuja in collaboration with Ogun State Ministry of Education, saying, these core values would enable them to perform their duties well as future legislators.
Represented by the Permanent Secretary in the Ministry, Mrs. Oluwatosin Oloko, Prof. Arigbabu acknowledged the contributions of teachers towards helping the learners to obtain higher education potential, saying their efforts and excellence would always be rewarded by Gov. Dapo Abiodun's administration.
"Learning these days is no more knowledge-based, but practical. We have introduced technology in driving technology in the state. We have considered the three domains of education, which are, cognitive, affective and psychomotor. We did not only encourage them on academics, we also support them on skill acquisition", he said.
The Commissioner appreciated the NILDS for the initiative of intimating students with knowledge about Legislature, legislation and democracy, just as he congratulated the winners for achieving the great feat of representing the state at the South-West Zonal level of the competition.
In his speech, the Director General of NILDS, Prof. Suleiman Abubakar, represented by the State Coordinator, Mrs. Abisola Ojogiwa, stated that the objective of the quiz was to provide continued education on Legislature and broaden the knowledge of students, as well as youths on the history, practice and procedure of the Legislature, to encourage deeper outstanding of civic and democratic governance.
Underscoring the purpose of the event, the Director of Education, Department of Education Support Services, Dr. Mary Okerafor, said it was important for people to acquaint themselves with the function, importance and roles of the Legislature and democracy, as it contributes to national development, revealing that the winner of the state category would proceed to South-West Zonal level.
Appreciating the state government and NILD, winners of the State Category, representing Ogun Central, Hannah Oyedotun and Precious Raizer from Adedokun International School, Ifo, said the competition had broadened their knowledge about Legislature and its activities.
