As part of efforts to achieve academic excellence in basic education in primary and junior levels, Ogun State Universal Basic Education Board (SUBEB), has trained Education Secretaries in the 20 Local Governments Education Authorities (LGEA).

 Chairman, SUBEB, Dr. Femi Majekodunmi, while speaking at a day workshop organised by the Department of Management Services (DMS) of the Board for the Secretaries in Oke-Mosan, Abeokuta, said it was imperative to improve the skill of Education Secretaries, as they serve as primary platform of education system at the grassroots.

Dr. Majekodunmi, stated that the workshop would create avenue for participants to cross-fertilise ideas, foster collaboration, and align with global best practices, for the successful implementation of the state government education policy.

He reiterated the Board’s commitment to improving teachers' welfare, ensure safety of learners, as well as provide conducive teaching and learning environment in schools under its jurisdiction, enjoining participants to support teachers’ capacity building initiative at various levels, champion education innovation, as well as ensure robust accountability and transparency in their domain.

In his presentation titled, ‘’Structure and Functions of Local Government Education Authorities’’, the Boards’ Secretary, Dr. Mikhail Lawal emphasised the need to widened the horizon of Education Secretaries, adding that the training would enable the participants to discharge their duties efficiently, as well as know their roles and responsibilities at their respective areas.

On his part, Director of Administration and Supplies in the Board, Mr. Olufemi Fatade, while delivering a paper titled, "State Basic Education Law and Policies As it Affects LGEA", represented by the Administrative Officer in Imeko-Afon LGEA, Mr. Niyi Olanite said Universal Basic Education in Nigeria, as recognised by section 15(i) of child’s Right Act of 2003; was to allow for free education for every child, and to provide qualitative basic education.

Contributing, Director of Finance and Accounts in the Board, Mr. Yemi Bamgbose, who spoke on,’’ Finance and its Management in the LGEA’’, stated that effective financial management in the Local Government and SUBEB, was essential in fostering educational environment that meets the need of the pupils, saying transparency, accountability and strategic resource allocation were hallmark to brighter future for basic education in the country.    

Speaking on behalf of other participants, Education Secretary in Ifo Local Government, Mr. Rasheed Akintoye lauded the organiser for the training, promising to apply the knowledge gained for the progress of the Board.
