18-year-old activist who criticised Sokoto governor declared missing - The Alternative News

Hamdiyya Sidi Sharif, the 18-year-old activist from Sokoto State who previously criticised Governor Ahmed Aliyu over insecurity, has been declared missing, POLITICS NIGERIA reports.

Sharif gained attention in November 2024 after posting a video criticising Governor Aliyu’s handling of insecurity and urging internally displaced persons to occupy the governor’s office in protest.

Following her remarks, she was arrested by the Sokoto Police Command and charged with “use of insulting or abusive language” and “inciting disturbance.”

After her release on bail, Sharif reportedly suffered physical attacks, including abduction and assault, which left her with serious injuries.

In February 2025, she was arraigned before a Sokoto magistrate court, and the case was adjourned to March 14.

As of now, there is no official statement from the Sokoto State Government regarding Sharif’s disappearance.
