NSF: SWAN President Hails Ogun Govt, Cautions journalists on fake news - The Alternative News

The National President of the Sports Writers Association of Nigeria, Isaiah Benjamin, on Monday, hailed Ogun State government for starting the sporting fiesta on a strong footing with a spectacular opening ceremony    cautioned journalists covering the ongoing 22nd National Sports Festival in Abeokuta, to display the highest level of professionalism and shun unsubstantiated reports.

Benjamin made this call while addressing the journalists at the media centre inside the June 12 Cultural Centre, Kuto, Abeokuta.

He explained that, though this does not mean that the state government has achieved perfection but it can always build on the success of the opening ceremony and make the festival the best ever in the country’s history.

He said, "in case you come across issues you are unclear about, please ask questions, the media committee is here to answer you, and the rule in journalism also says that you should leave out if you are in doubt.

“While no one is being gagged here, you are at liberty to do your report as long as it is factual, but do not portray us in a bad light.”

Benjamin also urged the journalists to be of the best behaviour, dress properly and be careful of the goings-on where they are not supposed to be found while also prioritising their safety at all times.

He disclosed that, as the usual practice, the association will also hold its convention during the national sports competition to assess the sporting event and then give its verdict via a communique.

Benjamin said that complaints around accreditation of journalists as well as transportation will also be sorted out with the relevant authorities to ensure that the journalists carry out their duties with less pain.

The Chairman, Media Committee of the Local Organising Committee, Kunle Solaja, also pledged that the committee will do all that is within its ability to ensure that the journalists covering the NSF get the job done with all the needed support.
