Ondo Governor Approves Death Penalty for Kidnapping - The Alternative News

The Ondo State Government has approved the death penalty for individuals convicted of kidnapping, as part of a sweeping move to combat rising insecurity in the state.

Speaking to journalists on Saturday after the monthly State Executive Council meeting, the Attorney-General and Commissioner for Justice, Kayode Ajulo, said the decision was taken with the full backing of Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa.

“Those convicted of kidnapping in Ondo State will henceforth face the death penalty. It is a decisive move to deter the rising wave of abductions and violence,” Ajulo announced.

Ondo State has recently witnessed a disturbing increase in kidnapping cases, with several victims reportedly killed and families forced to pay heavy ransoms. The new measure, according to the government, is aimed at restoring public safety and reinforcing the rule of law.

Ajulo described kidnapping and cultism as major threats to the peace and stability of communities across the state, adding that a strengthened legal framework is essential to reversing the trend.

“The security and lives of our people cannot be negotiated. Strong penalties will send a clear message to those behind these heinous crimes,” he said.

The Commissioner revealed that legislative proposals to back the policy will soon be transmitted to the Ondo State House of Assembly for formal enactment, which would legally enable the imposition of the death sentence on convicted kidnappers.

This development comes amid growing calls from civil society groups and residents for tougher measures against violent crimes across Nigeria’s southwestern region.
