Popular Ibadan-based broadcaster and founder of Agidigbo 88.7 FM, Oriyomi Hamzat, has strongly declared his intention to contest the 2027 governorship election in Oyo State, expressing confidence in his chances of victory.
Hamzat made the statement during a live radio program following a call from a listener abroad, who advised him against running for political office, claiming the masses would ultimately not support him despite his popularity and philanthropic efforts.
“Don’t listen to those who are saying Oyo is calling Oriyomi Hamzat. They are only lying,” the caller said.
“Even around your radio station, if politicians bring money, you’ll lose that polling unit. People might like you, but don’t count on their votes.”
In a swift and assertive response, Hamzat dismissed the pessimistic remarks, insisting he was not seeking validation and would not be discouraged by naysayers.
“Don’t say they won’t vote for me. You might even be the one to push me into the race. I have my own brain and I can make decisions,” he said during the broadcast.
“If I decide to contest, I will contest, and I will win. Don’t come here telling me I can’t. Do you know the hearts of the people? You’re judging tomorrow by yesterday.”
Hamzat, a household name in Oyo and beyond, is known for his vocal advocacy on social justice issues and grassroots engagement, which has earned him widespread admiration among ordinary citizens.
While he has not officially declared his candidacy, his comments appear to be the clearest indication yet of political ambition ahead of the 2027 elections.
Observers say a potential Oriyomi Hamzat candidacy could disrupt the traditional political landscape in Oyo, especially if he runs as an independent or under a less conventional party platform.
