The Federal Ministry of Foreign Affairs has dismissed recent criticisms by the African Democratic Congress (ADC) over delays in ambassadorial appointments, describing the party’s remarks as “alarmist, politically motivated, and misinformed.”

In a statement issued by Alkasim Abdulkadir, Special Assistant on Media and Communications Strategy to the Foreign Minister, the ministry emphasized that Nigeria’s foreign missions remain active and well-managed by professional diplomats, including experienced chargés d’affaires.

 “The Ministry considers the ADC’s remarks to be alarmist, politically motivated, and fundamentally misinformed about the operational realities of international diplomacy,” the statement said.

The ADC had earlier criticized the Tinubu administration over what it called the slow pace of ambassadorial appointments, claiming that Nigerian diplomatic missions were becoming "sorry symbols" abroad.

The ministry, however, refuted this claim, calling it insulting to the dedication of Nigeria’s career diplomats, who continue to represent the country under difficult conditions despite long-standing structural and funding challenges.

 “Ambassadorial appointments are a sovereign prerogative and not a political expedient,” the statement added.

The Ministry also cited ongoing high-level diplomatic engagements led by Minister Yusuf Tuggar as proof of Nigeria’s active and credible global presence.

In a broader rebuttal, the Ministry also rejected ADC’s criticism of Nigeria’s response to the alleged U.S. plan to deport Venezuelan prisoners to African nations, reaffirming that the government remains vigilant and guided by national interest in all international negotiations.
