CUPP Condemns Governor Okpebholo’s Threat to Peter Obi, Calls It ‘Thuggery and a Disgrace to Democracy’ - The Alternative News

The Coalition of United Political Parties (CUPP) has strongly condemned recent remarks by Edo State Governor Monday Okpebholo, describing his warning to former presidential candidate Peter Obi as a veiled death threat and an affront to the rule of law.

Governor Okpebholo reportedly warned Peter Obi, a 2027 presidential hopeful, against entering Edo State without his express approval. The governor further claimed that a previous visit by Obi, during which he donated ₦15 million to a nursing school, triggered unrest in Benin City that allegedly led to loss of life.

“If anything happens to him here, he will have himself to blame. I’m not joking,” Governor Okpebholo was quoted as saying.

This is the second such warning Obi has received from a state governed by the All Progressives Congress (APC), the first being from Benue State Governor Hyacinth Alia, raising concerns about political intolerance and escalating tensions ahead of the 2027 elections.

In a statement signed by Chief Peter Ameh, CUPP's National Publicity Secretary, the group described the governor's remarks as an “unacceptable display of thuggery” and a violation of Obi’s constitutional rights.

“Okpebholo’s recorded remarks, warning Obi not to ‘dare’ enter Edo State without his permission and stating that his security ‘is not guaranteed,’ constitute a veiled death threat,” CUPP stated.

The coalition emphasized that the Nigerian Constitution guarantees freedom of movement, and accused the governor of abusing power and undermining democracy.

“His only offence is traveling across the country to support hospitals, schools, nurses, and IDPs at their points of need. Should a governor fear acts of charity?” CUPP asked.

CUPP further urged civil society groups, political leaders, and citizens to speak out against such rhetoric, warning that unchecked threats from public officials “strike at the heart of Nigeria’s democracy.”

“Edo State and Nigeria deserve better than this shameful display of leadership. The rule of law must prevail, and no individual, no matter their position, should be allowed to trample on the rights of citizens.”

The group called for accountability and vigilance, warning that political intimidation could set a dangerous precedent in the build-up to the next general elections.
