A powerful tsunami has struck parts of Russia and Japan, following a massive 8.8 magnitude earthquake in the Pacific Ocean, near the Kamchatka Peninsula, Sahara reporters gathered.
In Russia, the coastal town of Severo-Kurilsk was hit by waves up to four meters high, prompting the evacuation of over 2,500 residents to higher ground. Emergency services report minor injuries but no fatalities at this time.
A major fish processing plant was submerged, and drone footage shows extensive flooding and damaged infrastructure.
In Japan, tsunami waves of up to 1.3 meters reached the eastern coast, with more than 1.9 million people across 21 prefectures urged to evacuate.
Tsunami warnings have also been issued for the U.S. West Coast, including California, Oregon, and Washington. In Hawaii, waves of up to four feet have already hit, with authorities urging residents to stay away from the shoreline.
Additional alerts have been issued in the Philippines, Indonesia, Taiwan, Chile, Peru, Ecuador, Mexico, and New Zealand.
Authorities across the Pacific are on high alert, with emergency services deployed and evacuations ongoing.
