Liverpool Retire No. 20 Shirt in Honour of Diogo Jota - The Alternative News

Liverpool Football Club has announced the permanent retirement of the number 20 shirt in honour of Diogo Jota, who tragically died in a car crash on July 3, alongside his brother, André Silva. The Portuguese forward had worn the number since joining Liverpool from Wolves in 2020.

This marks the first time in the club’s history that a shirt number will be retired. The decision was made after consultations with Jota’s family, including his wife Rute, who visited the Anfield memorial site on Friday, July 11. The retirement applies across all levels of the club, the men's and women's teams, as well as academy squads.

Jota, who helped Liverpool win the Premier League, FA Cup, and League Cup, is remembered not only for his achievements on the pitch but also for his profound personal impact on teammates and fans.

Liverpool’s first match since the tragedy will be a pre-season friendly against Preston North End on Sunday, July 13. The fixture will include emotional tributes: performances of Can’t Help Falling In Love and You’ll Never Walk Alone, a wreath-laying ceremony, a minute’s silence, digital displays, and black armbands worn by players. A special edition matchday programme will also be distributed to fans.

The match will be broadcast on ITV 1, LFCTV, and All Red Video, with coverage starting at 2:15pm BST.
