Public outrage has erupted after a female student of the Lagos State University (LASU), who recently accused her landlord of sexual harassment and death threats, was forcefully arrested by armed men believed to be police officers.
Videos circulating online, including one posted by Facebook user Obi Franklin, show the student being dragged and bundled into a vehicle by men dressed in what appeared to be police uniforms. At least one officer was visibly armed with an automatic rifle.
Eyewitnesses reported that the arresting officers claimed to be from the Zone 2 Police Command, but the student’s exact whereabouts remain unknown, fuelling growing fears for her safety.
Franklin, who raised the alarm on social media, tagged several human rights organisations and public figures, including Human Rights Watch, VeryDarkMan, the LASU Students Association, and the Nigeria Police Force, urging them to intervene.
“The LASU student that had a case with her landlord… has been arrested forcefully by men dressed as security officers… to an unknown destination,
“They told her neighbours they were from Zone Two. Please share until the IGP and the V.C. of Lagos State University see this," Franklin wrote."
The student had earlier posted a video online accusing her landlord of sexual harassment and issuing death threats after she rejected his advances. In the clip, the visibly shaken student is seen confronting the man, who allegedly said:
“You are going to die… If I see you here again…” He reportedly added that ₦500,000 could “settle” the matter.
The encounter took place at her residence in the Igando area of Lagos, where the landlord is said to operate a sachet water (‘pure water’) factory.
Social media activist VeryDarkMan, who visited the student’s residence to verify the claims, confirmed the existence of the factory and warned that the case extends beyond harassment.
“No be only the girl the man wan kpai ooo, na everybody wey dey drink him water he wan kpai,” he said in a viral video, calling on NAFDAC to investigate potential health and safety violations at the factory.
As of the time of this report, neither the Lagos State Police Command nor the LASU management has issued any official statement regarding the student’s arrest or current condition.
The incident has sparked renewed calls for accountability, protection of victims of gender-based violence, and transparency in law enforcement actions involving civilians.
