The Kebbi State Police Command has confirmed the arrest of ten individuals in connection with the alleged sexual abuse of a 13-year-old girl in Tungar Giwa, Shanga Local Government Area.

According to police sources, the incident occurred in February and involved multiple suspects who reportedly took turns assaulting the minor at different locations within the community.

The arrests followed a directive issued by the state command on Wednesday, July 16, instructing the Divisional Police Officer (DPO) in Shanga to apprehend the suspects and transfer them to the State Headquarters in Birnin Kebbi for further investigation.

The case has sparked outrage among residents and rights organisations, with calls for swift and transparent prosecution.

In reaction, the Kebbi State Technical Working Group on Gender-Based Violence (TWG-GBV), chaired by the state’s First Lady, Zainab Nasare Idris, applauded the police for their prompt response.

In a statement issued by the group’s Secretary, Nasiru Idris, the TWG called on authorities to ensure a thorough and impartial trial and warned against any interference in the judicial process.

The group also urged members of the public to report abuse cases and resist any attempt to protect offenders.

“The fight against gender-based violence requires collective vigilance and zero tolerance for impunity. No perpetrator should be shielded under any guise,” the statement read.

The Kebbi State Police Command assured that investigations are ongoing and pledged its commitment to ensuring justice for the victim.
