The Labour Party Caucus in the Nigerian Senate has condemned what it described as a dangerous and unconstitutional threat issued by Edo State Governor, Monday Okpebholo, against the former presidential candidate of the Labour Party, Mr. Peter Obi.
In a joint statement signed by Senators Victor Umeh, Ireti Kingibe, Ezea Okey, and Tony Nwoye, the caucus called on the Inspector General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, and the Director-General of the Department of State Services (DSS), Yusuf Magaji Bichi, to take note of the governor's remarks, which they described as an act of “executive rascality.”
According to the senators, Governor Okpebholo reportedly declared that Peter Obi's safety could not be guaranteed if he visited Edo State again without his permission, a statement that has drawn widespread concern.
They stated that Obi’s recent visit to Edo State, during which he donated ₦15 million to a nursing school, should not have warranted such hostility.
Quoting Section 41(1) of the Nigerian Constitution, the senators emphasized that every citizen of Nigeria has the right to move freely throughout the country without fear or intimidation.
“Mr. Peter Obi is a citizen of Nigeria and his movement is guaranteed and should not be curtailed by sheer executive lawlessness and impudence,” the statement read.
The caucus described Obi as a “champion of democracy, nation-building, and sustainable development,” stressing that he is entitled to protection under the law.
They called on Governor Okpebholo to withdraw his threat and issue a public apology for breaching his constitutional oath and threatening a fellow citizen’s right to movement and security.
“The Nigeria of this century cannot afford to condone executive rascality and abuse of office by public officers for the peace and harmony of this our dear country,” the senators added.
