The Chairman of the Ogun State Universal Basic Education Board (SUBEB), Evangelist Olalekan Ifede, has charged Education Secretaries across the State’s Senatorial Districts to develop strategic approaches aimed at improving pupils’ reading, speaking and writing skills in Public Primary Schools.

Speaking during a meeting in Oke-Mosan, Abeokuta, Ifede underscored the urgent need to address declining literacy levels among young learners, describing reading as foundational to academic success.

“This is a task that demands the collaboration and commitment of all stakeholders. If there’s no improvement in learners, then it means we’re not doing our job," he stated.

He emphasised that while the government remains committed to enhancing educational standards, it was crucial for Education Administrators and school leaders to play their part actively, describing SUBEB as “one big family,” urging Education Secretaries, to work in unity towards achieving a common goal of excellence.

The SUBEB Chairman also spoke on teachers conduct and appearance, stressing that educators must reflect professionalism in both teaching and presentation.

“The dress code among teachers needs to be looked into. Teachers should be well-dressed and presentable at all times, we are also encouraging the wearing of Adire attire every Friday to promote cultural identity and unity within our schools,’’ he said.

Earlier, Board Secretary, Mr. Olubori Akinleye, described the gathering as a new beginning for the Board, highlighting the importance of effective communication and collaboration, while urging stakeholders to remain on the same page in achieving lasting solution in basic education sector.

Responding on behalf of other Education Secretaries, Mr. Alli Olanrewaju of Abeokuta South and Mr. Ayoola Paul of Imeko-Afon Local Governments Education Authorities, expressed appreciation to the Board for the interactive engagement, pledging their support in implementing SUBEB’s vision and ensuring the success of its initiatives.
