At least nine people, including three children, have been confirmed dead following a tragic road accident along the Maiduguri–Damaturu highway on Friday afternoon.
The crash, which occurred at approximately 3:30 PM, involved a Toyota Hummer bus belonging to Borno Express and a commercial trailer. The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) attributed the accident to speeding and loss of control.
In a statement issued by FRSC Borno Sector Commander, Usman Muhammad, the deceased included five male adults, one female adult, two male children, and one female child.
“Eight passengers died on the spot, while one later died at the Specialist Hospital in Maiduguri,” Muhammad confirmed.
An additional seven passengers sustained injuries and are currently receiving medical treatment at the Specialist Hospital, Maiduguri.
The FRSC commander expressed condolences to the families of the victims and urged drivers to exercise greater caution while on the roads.
“Our thoughts and condolences go out to the families and loved ones of the deceased. Authorities are investigating the cause of the crash,” the statement added.
He further emphasized the need for strict adherence to speed limits, especially along busy inter-state highways, noting that excessive speed continues to be a leading cause of fatal road crashes in the region.
The FRSC said more details will be released as investigations progress.
