Former federal lawmaker, Senator Shehu Sani, has cautioned Nigerians agitating for the creation of new states, describing the effort as a waste of time and resources.
In a post shared on his official X (formerly Twitter) handle on Friday, Sani emphasized that the process of creating new states in Nigeria is constitutionally complicated and cannot be achieved through mere executive decisions or presidential declarations.
> “People asking for the creation of new states should stop wasting their time and resources. They should learn to live with each other in peace. Read the constitution to know the complications. It’s not something which the President will just proclaim or announce,” he wrote.
His comment comes amid renewed agitations from various ethnic and regional groups across the country demanding the creation of additional states to address issues of representation, marginalization, and resource control.
The Nigerian constitution outlines a rigorous process for state creation, requiring:Approval by two-thirds majority of both National and State Assemblies,
A referendum in the affected area,
and endorsement by the National Assembly and the President.
Sani, known for his outspokenness on national issues, urged Nigerians to focus instead on peaceful coexistence, rather than pursuing divisive or unrealistic demands.
His remarks add to the ongoing national conversation about restructuring, equity, and unity in the face of Nigeria’s complex federal system.
