The All Progressives Congress (APC) has expressed confidence that President Bola Ahmed Tinubu will win re-election in 2027, regardless of who is appointed as the next Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).
APC National Secretary, Ajibola Basiru, made this assertion in an interview with The Sun. He dismissed suggestions that the ruling party might attempt to influence the appointment of a new electoral umpire, stressing that the responsibility lies with civil society groups and the National Assembly.
Basiru argued that the APC’s focus is on mobilising Nigerians for Tinubu’s re-election, not on who becomes INEC chairman.
“How can you be asking a player to recommend a referee? We are players and don’t care about which referee is brought to officiate the match,” Basiru said.
He added that Tinubu’s victory was assured through the party’s grassroots strength, saying even if the new INEC chairman were related to an opposition candidate, Tinubu would still prevail in 2027.
