Commissioner for Culture and Tourism, Hon. Sesan Fagbayi has disclosed that all hands must be on deck to entrench Yoruba language among the present generation, in order to enhance its visibility, its importance and ensure its sustainability.
Fagbayi made this disclosure while featuring on a live Television programme in Abeokuta, saying that proactive steps should be taken towards promoting culture and preservation of tradition which Yoruba Language symbolises.
The Commissioner said in order to ensure compliance and promotion of indigenous language among the present generation, parents should internalise it as the basic mode of communication, noting further that the language should be made compulsory in the school curriculum and be taught at both primary and secondary levels.
He stated that the yearly celebration of Yoruba day should be stepped up with the support of schools, social media and other forms of technological devices.
Fagbayi emphasised that "If Yoruba is spoken daily, integrated in schools, taught thoroughly in learning, embedded in modern technology and celebrated in public life, it will not only survive but thrive among generations to come",
He equally added that the State Government through the House of Assembly and the Ministry of Education, Science and Technology are working to address these challenges, as efforts are on ground to revive and preserve indigenous languages through support policies that would integrate native languages into schools curriculum as a means of cultural legacy for coming generations.
