Kano Govt to Convert Historic Kurmawa Prison into Museum - The Alternative News

The Kano State Government has announced plans to transform the 115-year-old Kurmawa Maximum Security Prison into a museum as part of its heritage preservation efforts.

Built in 1910 by the British colonial administration within the Kano Emir’s Palace precincts, the facility has long stood as a symbol of colonial and correctional history. The prison, originally designed to hold 690 inmates, will be repurposed to showcase historical artifacts and promote Kano’s rich cultural heritage.

According to Ibrahim Adam, Special Adviser on Information, inmates will be relocated to the newly built correctional facility in Janguza, which can accommodate up to 3,000 prisoners. The Janguza facility was constructed during the administration of former President Muhammadu Buhari.

“The Kurmawa Correctional Center will be transformed into a museum dedicated to preserving historical artifacts and promoting the rich culture of the state,” Adam stated via his official Facebook page.

He added that the initiative, led by Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf’s administration, aims to balance heritage preservation with improved correctional infrastructure, ensuring inmates are housed in a more secure and humane environment.
