NAFDAC Raises Alarm Over Counterfeit Cowbell Milk in Circulation - The Alternative News

The National Agency for Food and Drugs Administration and Control (NAFDAC) has alerted Nigerians to the circulation of counterfeit Cowbell “Our Milk” 12g sachets in the market.

In a statement posted on its website on Friday, the agency disclosed that Promasidor Nigeria Ltd, the marketing authorisation holder and manufacturer of Cowbell “Our Milk,” reported the existence of fake products closely resembling the genuine sachets.

According to NAFDAC, the counterfeit versions bear unauthorised use of the brand name, packaging design, trademark, and even a fake NAFDAC registration number. Promasidor confirmed that the counterfeit packaging design was last used in September 2023 and has since been replaced.

How to Identify Fake vs Genuine Cowbell “Our Milk”

Genuine product: creamy content, revised PNG “Our Creamy Goodness” artwork, laser-printed batch details, coding done in the designated area, and automated sealing/cutting on vertical sides.

Counterfeit product: content does not resemble milk, old PNG “Our Milk” artwork, batch details printed with ink (not laser), coding outside the designated area, and manually sealed/cut sachets.

NAFDAC warned that consuming counterfeit milk poses serious health risks. Such products may contain toxic chemicals, unapproved additives, or diluted ingredients below food safety standards. Possible effects include foodborne illnesses, allergic reactions, organ damage, or even death—especially for infants, children, pregnant women, and the elderly.

The agency directed all zonal directors and state coordinators to intensify surveillance and mop up the fake products in their jurisdictions.

It also advised distributors, retailers, and consumers to exercise vigilance and source food products only from authorised suppliers, while checking authenticity and packaging carefully.

Consumers and healthcare professionals are encouraged to report suspected counterfeit products or adverse reactions to the nearest NAFDAC office, via the toll-free number 0800-162-3322, or by email at [email protected]. Reports can also be submitted through the e-reporting platform on the NAFDAC website (www.nafdac.gov.ng) or by email to [email protected].
