The Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) says all unregistered Subscriber Identity Modules (SIMs) have been removed from the country’s telecommunications networks.

Executive Vice Chairman of the Commission, Aminu Maida, disclosed this at a media briefing in Abuja on Monday, describing the move as a major step towards strengthening national and cyber security.

Maida noted that while no unregistered SIM is active, some subscribers may still be using false names, warning that it remains a criminal offence to make or receive calls with fake identities.

He also revealed that the NCC will in September launch a public map showing network coverage and tariff plans across the country, enabling subscribers to choose the best services.

On recent tariff adjustments, Maida explained that the increase was necessary, as operators had worked without a cost-reflective framework for over a decade. He assured that the rates were balanced to protect both consumers and service providers.

The NCC boss further pledged to engage state governors to tackle multiple taxation and threats to telecom infrastructure, adding that improved governance and fresh investments would enhance service delivery and national security.
