The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) will today in Abuja receive the report of its zoning committee as its National Executive Committee (NEC) holds its 102nd session.
The zoning panel, chaired by Bayelsa State Governor Douye Diri, has recommended that the current zoning arrangement of National Working Committee (NWC) offices between the North and South be retained. The South has already micro-zoned its positions to the three geopolitical zones, while the North is expected to conclude its sharing after the NEC meeting.
At a stakeholders’ meeting in Lagos last week, the South-South secured the Deputy National Chairman and National Publicity Secretary, the South-West got the National Secretary and National Auditor, while the South-East was allocated the Deputy National Secretary and Financial Secretary. Oyo State is tipped to produce the National Secretary, while Akwa Ibom is to take the Publicity Secretary slot.
The development comes ahead of the party’s national elective convention scheduled for November 15–16 in Ibadan, Oyo State, as the tenure of the current NWC led by Ambassador Umar Damagum ends in December.
However, the arrangement has sparked fresh disputes, with allies of FCT Minister Nyesom Wike rejecting the Lagos micro-zoning outcome and warning that failure to honour earlier South-South resolutions could trigger a crisis.
