Police Arrest Officer, Others for Terrorising Benin Residents - The Alternative News

The Edo State Police Command has arrested a serving police inspector and three civilian accomplices for allegedly terrorising residents of Benin City through extortion, brutality, and armed robbery.

Police spokesperson, Moses Yamu, disclosed this in a statement on Sunday, noting that the arrest followed a viral video in which a victim accused some policemen of abducting him, seizing his phone and valuables, and subjecting him to harassment.

Acting on the report, Commissioner of Police Monday Agbonika ordered a swift investigation and the arrest of the suspects.

“On 15th August 2025, operatives of the Ugbowo Surveillance Team successfully intercepted the suspects with a silver-coloured Toyota Yaris and other incriminating items,” Yamu said.

He described the incident as “shameful and criminal,” adding that the suspects would face the full weight of the law.

Quoting the commissioner, Yamu stressed that the command maintains zero tolerance for corruption, misconduct, and abuse of office within the Force.

“Any officer caught engaging in extortion, brutality, or corruption will be dismissed, arrested, and prosecuted,” Agbonika warned.

The command urged members of the public, including the victim in the viral video, to provide credible information that would aid investigations and ensure justice.

Yamu reaffirmed the commitment of the Edo Police Command to protecting lives and property, restoring public confidence, and upholding the integrity of the Nigeria Police Force.
