A suspected internet fraudster, commonly referred to as a Yahoo boy, has been arrested after crashing his Mercedes-Benz saloon car into a group of traders at New Market, Benin City, Edo State.
The Edo State Police Command confirmed the incident, which occurred on Sunday. According to the Command’s spokesperson, SP Moses Yamu, no fatalities were recorded, but three traders sustained injuries and are currently receiving medical treatment.
"The reckless driver is under detention," Yamu stated in a Monday press release.
Eyewitnesses at the scene said the vehicle, a Mercedes-Benz with Lagos plate number LND 192 JZ, was speeding from the Sakponba Road axis when the driver lost control and veered into the market area.
A trader, Sandra Osaro, noted that the accident could have been more catastrophic had it happened on a market day, Tuesday or Thursday, when the area is usually crowded with traders and customers purchasing second-hand clothes and shoes.
Another trader, Mama Ivie, recounted a narrow escape. “The vehicle destroyed my stand and tables. I had just returned from church where I gave thanks for surviving a previous fatal accident,” she said, visibly shaken.
Police say investigations are ongoing, while the suspect remains in custody.
