The Ogun State Universal Basic Education Board (SUBEB), in collaboration with the Universal Basic Education Commission (UBEC), has commenced a capacity-building programme for teachers in public primary schools across the State.

Speaking at the 5-day training at Baptist Nursery and Primary School, Ibode-Ijaye, Abeokuta, with the theme, “Equipping Teachers with Skills Needed to Carry Out Activity-Based Teaching of Science and Mathematics,” Chairman of SUBEB, Evangelist Olalekan Ifede, said the initiative was aimed at improving the teaching and learning of Mathematics and Science in public schools.

Ifede explained that the training would strengthen teachers’ skills, enhance learners’ performance, and promote academic excellence in basic education across Ogun State.

“When you have the opportunity to be trained, it is not for you alone, but for others. That is why, when you are selected, it is with the expectation that you will pass the knowledge on to others,” he said.

He emphasized the importance of full participation throughout the five-day programme to achieve its objectives, assuring teachers that lapses noticed in previous trainings would be corrected in subsequent ones.

He urged participants to engage facilitators actively by asking questions, stressing that the training was designed to transform teaching methods.

“We want you to pass the knowledge you gain here to others, so you can teach our learners effectively. Let the pupils know that Mathematics and Science are not witchcraft. Pay attention to the training you’ll receive here,” Ifede added.

He further advised teachers to always dress corporately and serve as role models to pupils, noting that teaching remains the best profession among others.

Responding, Head of Facilitators, Mr. Taiwo Sodipo, appreciated SUBEB for the initiative and assured participants of impactful sessions that would make the training memorable.
