The management of ARISE News Channel has confirmed the death of one of its anchors, Somtochukwu Christelle Maduagwu, who was killed during an armed robbery at her residence in Katampe, Abuja, in the early hours of Monday.

According to a statement by the network, the 29-year-old journalist, fondly called “Sommie”, succumbed to injuries sustained in the attack, which is now under investigation by the Nigeria Police.

Maduagwu was a prominent figure at ARISE News, where she served as a News Anchor, Reporter, and Producer. Her charisma, professionalism, and engaging delivery made her a familiar face to viewers across the country.

“Sommie was not only a cherished member of the ARISE News family but also a vibrant voice that engaged and connected with our viewers,” the station said. “Beyond the airwaves, Sommie was a lawyer, a supportive colleague, and a friend to many.”

Her death has sent shockwaves through the Nigerian media industry, with colleagues and friends paying tribute to her on social media, remembering her passion, brilliance, and warmth.

The ARISE management expressed profound grief, calling for a “speedy investigation, apprehension, and prosecution of the culprits.” It also extended condolences to her parents, siblings, and loved ones, adding: “Sommie’s voice is now silent, but her spirit, passion, and legacy will endure as part of our collective memory.”

Somtochukwu Christelle Maduagwu was born on December 26, 1995. She was 29 years old.
