The leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), Nnamdi Kanu, on Tuesday held a private consultation with his legal team led by former Attorney General of the Federation (AGF), Kanu Agabi, SAN, in preparation for the defence phase of his ongoing trial.

Kanu, who was brought to the Federal High Court, Abuja, by operatives of the Department of State Services (DSS), met his lawyers inside Court 7, temporarily vacated for the meeting by Justice James Omotosho. The session took place between 9:00 a.m. and 12 noon, in line with the court’s directive.

The meeting forms part of preparations ahead of the commencement of Kanu’s defence on Thursday, October 23, as earlier scheduled by Justice Omotosho. The judge had, on September 16, fixed six consecutive days, beginning October 23, for the defendant to open and close his case in view of the accelerated hearing granted.

During a previous proceeding on October 16, Agabi had orally requested that the defence team be allowed to hold a private consultation with Kanu, outside the DSS premises, expressing fears that discussions with the defendant could be recorded or monitored by the security agency.

Justice Omotosho granted the request, approving that the private session be held within the courtroom, with only Kanu and his lawyers in attendance.

The trial is expected to resume on October 23, when the IPOB leader will open his defence.
