EFCC Can End Corruption If.......– Senator Nwaebonyi - The Alternative News

Vice Chairman of the South East Constitution Review Committee, Senator Onyekachi Nwaebonyi, has expressed confidence that Nigeria could witness the complete eradication of corruption in the public sector if the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) maintains its current level of performance and efficiency.

Speaking in an interview with ARISE News on Wednesday, Nwaebonyi praised the EFCC Chairman, Ola Olukoyede, and his team for transforming the agency from what he described as a “media trial institution” into one delivering tangible results.

“You remember that before now, EFCC was doing more of media trials without achieving much. But within these two years plus, the Commission has secured a lot of convictions, showing that they are working. I believe that if they continue this way, very soon corruption will be completely eradicated in our public system,” he said.

The lawmaker noted that the EFCC now operates with a commendable level of independence and urged the agency to periodically update Nigerians on high-profile investigations, including cases where no substantial evidence is found.

“Law is a game governed by rules and facts. When a petition alleges that a politician embezzled funds, it is the duty of the EFCC to investigate and determine whether the claim is true or not. They are doing a good job and we are not dictating to them,” he stated.

Nwaebonyi added that making the outcomes of inconclusive or unsubstantiated cases public would help correct the public perception that all politicians are corrupt.

“Most high-profile cases that have no prima facie evidence should be made public so Nigerians will not think all politicians are thieves. Not all politicians are corrupt, some of us are genuinely committed to setting things right for the development of this country,” he said.

Meanwhile, PUNCH Online recalls that on October 16, 2025, the Presidency commended the EFCC for what it described as its outstanding transformation and growth into a leading anti-corruption institution.

The Special Adviser to the President on Policy and Coordination and Head of the Central Results Delivery Coordination Unit, Hadiza Bala Usman, gave the commendation while presenting the Commission’s Performance Charter to the EFCC Chairman at the agency’s headquarters in Abuja.

“You should all be proud of yourselves,” Usman said. “Some of us have followed the EFCC’s journey for a long time, and I must say that the organisation has grown tremendously since 2000. Every visit to EFCC shows visible improvement, few agencies have evolved this remarkably.”
