FIFA U-20 World Cup: Argentina Humiliate Nigeria 4 - 0 - The Alternative News

Six-time champions Argentina cruised into the quarter-finals of the 2025 FIFA U-20 World Cup with a comprehensive 4–0 victory over Nigeria’s Flying Eagles on Wednesday.

The Round of 16 clash, played at the Estadio Nacional in Santiago, Chile, saw Argentina avenge their 2–0 defeat to Nigeria at the same stage of the 2023 edition, which they hosted.

Alejo Sarco put the South Americans ahead in the 2nd minute, before Maher Carrizo doubled the lead in the 23rd minute with a stunning free-kick following a foul by Nasiru Salihu on the edge of the box.

Nigeria’s appeals for a penalty were ignored moments later after Ramirez appeared to bring down Salihu in the area.

Despite flashes of brilliance from winger Oseer Achihi, whose deliveries caused the Argentine defence several problems, the Flying Eagles struggled to convert their chances. Daniel Daga came closest to scoring late in the first half, but goalkeeper Santino Barbi produced a fine save to preserve Argentina’s two-goal advantage.

Carrizo struck again in the 53rd minute after a swift counterattack, before substitute Matheus Silvetti sealed the win with a composed finish in the 66th minute, firing low past Nigeria’s goalkeeper Ebenezer Harcourt.

The heavy defeat brings Nigeria’s campaign in Chile to a disappointing end. The Flying Eagles, who are two-time runners-up at the U-20 World Cup, will now turn their attention to future continental competitions.
