Sultan Dismisses Christian Genocide Claim in Nigeria - The Alternative News

The Sultan of Sokoto and Chairman of the Northern Traditional Rulers Council (NTRC), Alhaji Sa’ad Abubakar III, has dismissed claims of a Christian genocide in Nigeria, describing them as false and misleading narratives that must not be allowed to persist.

Speaking at the 2025 General Assembly of the Northern Traditional Council held in Birnin Kebbi, Kebbi State, on Tuesday, the Sultan condemned reports, particularly from Western nations such as the United States and Canada, alleging targeted killings of Christians in Nigeria.

“They have been saying there was genocide of Christians in Nigeria by the Western countries such as the USA, Canada and others. Where, when? These are false stories,” he said.

The Sultan argued that it would be impossible for such mass killings to occur in any part of the country without the awareness of traditional rulers, who are deeply rooted in their communities.

He also called for greater regulation of social media, lamenting that misinformation and negative content were damaging Nigeria’s image and inciting unnecessary tension.

In addition, the Sultan urged Nigerians to refrain from vilifying the military, acknowledging their crucial sacrifices in preserving national unity and stability. While admitting that the armed forces face challenges, he described social media claims accusing security agencies of collusion with bandits as “callous and unbecoming.”

Reaffirming the loyalty of traditional rulers to the nation’s democratic institutions, Abubakar pledged continued support for the President, National and State Assemblies, and Governors, stressing that the council would continue to provide guidance toward peace and development.

Representing President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, Chief of Staff Femi Gbajabiamila commended traditional rulers for their role in conflict resolution and peacebuilding, noting that their influence remains vital in reducing tension and fostering unity.

Declaring the meeting open, Kebbi State Governor Nasir Idris promised to enhance the welfare of traditional institutions and equip them with modern facilities to strengthen their functions.

The Chief of Defence Staff, General Christopher Musa, also assured that security agencies were working tirelessly to restore peace across northern Nigeria, describing traditional leaders as “the first line of engagement between the government and the people.”
