President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has appointed Professor Joash Ojo Amupitan (SAN) as the new Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).
The appointment, which received unanimous approval from the National Council of State, was announced on Thursday in a statement by the President’s Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga.
President Tinubu presented Amupitan’s name to the Council during its meeting at the Presidential Villa, Abuja, noting that the 58-year-old Professor of Law from Kogi State is the first person from the North Central region to hold the position.
Amupitan’s appointment follows the completion of the 10-year tenure of the outgoing INEC Chairman, Professor Mahmood Yakubu, in October 2025.
