President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has forwarded three ambassadorial nominations to the Senate for screening and confirmation.
The announcement was made on Wednesday by Senate President Godswill Akpabio during plenary. The nominees are: Kayode Are, Ogun State; Aminu Dalhatu, Jigawa State; and Ayodele Oke
Akpabio noted that more names are expected, saying: “The list contains three names for now; I am sure others will follow.”
The development comes months after concerns were raised about Nigeria’s diplomatic missions operating without substantive ambassadors. In September, the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Ambassador Yusuf Tuggar, had clarified that embassies were functioning effectively under chargés d’affaires and senior mission staff.
According to Tuggar, the absence of ambassadors had not hampered diplomatic operations. He emphasized that embassy structures, including deputies, counsellors, and career officers, continue to handle daily responsibilities.
He added that ambassadorial appointments remain the exclusive prerogative of the president and would be made at the appropriate time. Tuggar also reassured Nigerians that the country’s foreign policy objectives, as well as consular, trade, and cultural engagements abroad, have remained uninterrupted.
