The African Democratic Congress (ADC) has officially welcomed former Anambra State Governor and 2023 Labour Party presidential candidate, Mr Peter Obi, into its fold, describing his defection as a major boost to the party ahead of the 2027 general election.

The development was announced on Wednesday by the ADC’s National Publicity Secretary, Mallam Bolaji Abdullahi, in a post on X (formerly Twitter).

“The African Democratic Congress (ADC) is delighted to officially welcome the former two-term Governor of Anambra State and Presidential Candidate of the Labour Party in the 2023 General Election, Mr Peter Obi, to the ADC. What a way to begin the New Year!” Abdullahi wrote.

Obi, who contested the 2023 presidential election on the platform of the Labour Party, formally defected to the ADC earlier on Wednesday.

The move is widely seen as a significant boost for the ADC, coming amid ongoing opposition realignments as political parties position themselves ahead of the 2027 general election.

Political analysts say Obi’s entry into the ADC could reshape opposition strategies and alter political calculations in the build-up to the next polls.
