Damagum Hands Over to Turaki as PDP Chairman, Says Party “Still the One to Beat” - The Alternative News

Former Acting National Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Ambassador Illiya Damagum, on Tuesday officially handed over leadership to the newly constituted National Working Committee (NWC) led by Tanimu Turaki.

The handover ceremony, which took place at the Bauchi State Governor’s Lodge in Abuja, comes ahead of the expiration of the outgoing NWC’s tenure on December 8, despite ongoing legal disputes involving the faction loyal to the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike. Several former NWC members were also in attendance.

Damagum said the new NWC carries the responsibility of stabilising and rebuilding the party, stressing that the experience of the outgoing team would serve as a guide. He acknowledged that the Turaki-led leadership is assuming office during a challenging period but expressed optimism.

“The beauty of it is that we were able to surmount all the obstacles that we faced, and we will continue to surmount them,” he said.

Reaffirming confidence in the PDP’s prospects, Damagum described the party as “still the party to beat”, noting that its strength continues to unsettle its opponents.

“That’s why they lose sleep about PDP. They keep putting different hurdles in our way, but God will see us through. We are positive. God is a just God; He does not support injustice,” he added.

He warned that those fueling crises within the party may enjoy temporary relief but would eventually face the consequences of their actions.

In his remarks, new chairman Tanimu Turaki commended the outgoing NWC for its service and pledged to work diligently to strengthen and reposition the PDP.
