I Have Openly Stated My Position — Wike Reacts to Fubara’s Comment - The Alternative News

The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, has stated that the political disagreement between him and Rivers State Governor, Siminalayi Fubara, is far from over, stressing that harmony is rarely permanent in politics.

Wike made this known on Monday during his monthly media briefing in Abuja, while reacting to recent comments credited to Governor Fubara, which suggested that some political figures were secretly supporting President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.

The Rivers State governor, who recently declared support for the All Progressives Congress (APC), had alleged that certain individuals were backing the president in a “corner, corner” manner. The remark was widely interpreted as a reference to Wike, a member of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) who currently serves in the APC-led federal government.

Responding, Wike dismissed the insinuation, insisting that his support for President Tinubu has always been open and well known to Nigerians.

“I don’t know who is following Tinubu and doing ‘corner, corner.’ How can that be when the whole of Nigeria knows that I have openly stated my position?” he said.

The former Rivers State governor recalled that even when PDP governors accused him of working for Tinubu, he never denied it and remained firm in his stance.

“If I were supporting Tinubu secretly, many people would not have supported him. Even council chairmen would not have followed,” Wike added.

He warned that politicians lose credibility when they fail to stand by their words, emphasizing that consistency and transparency have defined his political career.

“I don’t want to be that kind of politician. Once I say something, people should be able to rely on it. Everybody knows that when I state what I will do, I will do it,” he said.

Wike also rejected suggestions that political peace had been restored between him and Fubara, noting that disagreements are inevitable in politics.
“No, it’s not about everything being well. In politics, all can never be well,” he stated.

Addressing claims that he failed to intervene in the political crisis rocking Rivers State, the FCT minister said such assertions were untrue. According to him, he had held discussions with Governor Fubara, the Speaker of the Rivers State House of Assembly, lawmakers, and prominent elders of the state.

“People are economical with the truth. The governor cannot say that I have not intervened between him, the Speaker, and the leadership of the House. He cannot also deny that I have engaged with elders, even in his presence,” Wike said.
