Leadership Tussle: INEC Meets With PDP Factions - The Alternative News

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has commenced talks with the two rival factions of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) over the party’s protracted leadership crisis.

The meeting, which is holding at INEC’s national headquarters in Abuja, is aimed at resolving internal disputes that have continued to threaten the stability and cohesion of the opposition party.

The emergency engagement brought together representatives of the factions led by Tanimu Turaki and Abdulrahman Mohammed. The Mohammed-led faction is widely believed to enjoy the backing of the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, while the Turaki group claims recognition by key party organs and structures.

Sources within the electoral body confirmed that the dialogue is part of INEC’s efforts to clarify the leadership status of the PDP and prevent further confusion ahead of future electoral activities. The commission is reportedly worried about receiving conflicting communications and submissions from the party.

Tanimu Turaki attended the meeting alongside members of his National Working Committee, officials of the party secretariat, and former Niger State Governor, Babangida Aliyu, who is regarded as a major stakeholder in the PDP.

On the other side, Abdulrahman Mohammed led members of the PDP’s national caretaker committee, including its secretary, Senator Sam Anyanwu, and other senior figures aligned with the faction.

The closed-door meeting is expected to centre on documentation, leadership claims, and possible pathways towards resolving the internal rift that has divided the party in recent months. INEC officials are said to be seeking clarity on which faction holds the legitimate authority to act on behalf of the PDP.

Discussions were ongoing, with no official statement released by INEC or either of the PDP factions.
